What’s New: Haircuts and House Hunting

Annabelle's new 'do at Vibrant WanderingsAs I was finishing up last week’s update post, Annabelle, who had been immersed in an art activity in the kitchen, walked into the office and told me, “I just wanted my hair to be a little bit shorter.” I turned around and, sure enough, her hair was a little bit shorter. At least part of it, anyway. She gave herself some bangs, and me a laugh. I evened things out a bit, and a few days later we went to our favorite stylist to perfect the look Annabelle was going for. It’s adorable, really. Continue reading

What’s New: Rain, Rain, Go Away

20130504_145516 (450x600)After a gorgeous weekend, complete with walks to the farmer’s market and our neighborhood nursery school’s truck touch, stroller naps, and many hours in the back yard, we’ve been hit with days of rainy weather. Of course this is wonderful for our garden, but I’m so very ready for another back yard afternoon or two. Continue reading

What’s New: Art and Object Permanence

A rare seated moment

Oh, these kids.

Elliot is a walking machine, moving back and forth with both speed and ease. Crawling? He has no use for it! He bites everything in sight, literally devouring books but showing little interest in having them read to him. He climbs, he smiles, he laughs and laughs, and he shows incredible determination. I’ve been blocking both of the doorways to our dining room/classroom when it’s not in use, because he likes to take all of the work off the shelves and throw it, so he has been working on getting around my barricades, or ramming his body up against them to make them move. Often all he really wants is the sphere from the geometric solids, which makes a pretty marvelous sound when you hit it on the wood floor. Continue reading

Checking out the new reading nook together.

Phew! I am so glad to finally be sitting down for an update after my lapse last week. I keep mentioning the specific things that keep me from updating or publishing what and when I plan to, as though these situations are exceptions. I’m admitting to myself now that having limited time is just the rule these days, though. I do so enjoy being in this space, so I’ll keep on making the time wherever I can, but there really is no sense in either apologizing or making promises, is there?

If you saw Tuesday’s post, you have an idea of the most recent project to take me away from blogging. We had some heavy rains in our area on Friday night, and the basement of the home that usually hosts our Montessori community was flooded. Fortunately, all of the materials were safe, but with flooring in need of repair, it was going to be tough to meet for class as scheduled. With only a few weeks left before we stop meeting for the summer, I ended up moving everything to our house so that we wouldn’t have to miss too much time as a group. Continue reading

What’s New: Summer Weather and Walking Feet

DSC_1138 (600x373)We seem to have skipped over Spring and jumped straight into hot, humid summer weather. On Saturday, we were planning to see some fireworks as part of the Southwest Waterfront Fireworks Festival, but by late afternoon we decided it was way too cold to stay out and made other plans. Yesterday, it was in the nineties and we were splashing around in the back yard to cool off and avoid turning on the AC inside. What a difference a few days makes! Continue reading
