What’s New: Imaginary Friends and Autumn Leaves

Annabelle/Little Boy (left) and Little Girl (right)

Sadly, we said “see you later,” to Annabelle and Elliot’s Grammie on Sunday, and we have been taking it pretty easy ever since. We’ve done a few special things to welcome fall, but have mostly been sticking to the usual routine. I’ve been noticing some small, but not insignificant changes in Annabelle, who seems to be coming into her own in the world. One of the first outings we made a regular thing when we moved here was “Rise and Rhyme,” a weekly music and storytelling series at my favorite local restaurant. Each week, a musician comes in and offers a program for the children. Depending on the performer, this can look like anything from an extended preschool circle time to a rock concert. Annabelle loves it, but is always hesitant about participating. In fact, she likes to sit just inside the room where the event takes place and observe while eating her breakfast. To my surprise, last week she wanted to sit much nearer the stage, and this week she actually went up front, danced, and participated for the last few minutes of the program. I could have watched her get her groove on all day!

She continues to pretend that she’s someone or something else for most of the day and to give me corresponding roles. Yesterday, she even put out two mats to use with her play dough and told me that she was a little boy playing with dough and, motioning to the empty space in front of the other mat, “That’s a little girl right there playing with dough also.”

Elliot still spends most of the day asleep in a wrap, but is getting much more comfortable with the idea of hanging out on the floor next to me some of the time, too. His coos and smiles are pretty much the sweetest thing on the planet. He has a super intense startle reflex and gets really upset if you move him, or yourself while holding him, too quickly. He’s a laid back dude and prefers a slow-paced existence, I guess.

There’s not much else to report this week, really, so I’ll leave you with the rest of our daily mamatography photos. Don’t forget to link up if you have an update post of your own!

Annabelle was crazy about these alligators at the aquarium.

This autumn leaf crown stayed on for about 2.5 minutes.

I love that she pretends to be someone else all day! Apart from that, even though they are each very unique this post was like reading about B, honestly… Setting places for others, getting the groove on a bit more, the drawings. They are soul sistahs at the moment!
Elliott looks very happy, the in-arms phase is suiting him well, kudos to the Mammy for giving him that opportunity.
And an alligator, wow. The mandala is a great idea too – will get Ian on to it.

I feel the same way about all of your posts about B – those girls really are soul sistahs! If only we could get them together….

    ooooh those baby photos!!!
    And A with her art!
That is a totally cool Mandala too.
We just accepted an offer on our house and are in Escrow! Now to find a rental.
We found 3 that were so perfectly close to Em’s school and when I called I was told they had literally rented them the day before.
    What the heck?!!!
I really want to be walking distance from school
Fingers crossed for the next one.

Oh, Tree, I am so excited for you! That was FAST! I’ll be sending perfect house vibes your way. I’m sure the right place is out there :)

  • Lovely. My kid is the same – loves creating and living in her own world. It is sooo fun!!

You know, you just reminded me. I was aware Autumn had arrived and completely forgot to mark it. We so need to go out and do something to celebrate fall. Nica has been excited that there’ll be more puddles and leaves to play with and she is super psyched about the coming of pumpkin patches (which mostly means train rides and bouncy castles, alas, over here) – but still I think she thinks of this as one of her favourite seasons (so far) and we really should welcome it in style. Thanks for the reminder :D

Loved your photos, as usual. Thanks for sharing!!

Thank you, Gauri :) I’ll look forward to seeing some puddle jumping and fall celebrating photos in one of your future mamatography posts!

  • 2.5 minutes is pretty good for toddler headgear! :) So cute about her little dancing queen moment. We just started attending story time at the library (which made me think of you and that sad story from when you first got to DC!) and Lorelei decided to march up to the front to rearrange the animals on the felt board for the story we were hearing. Oh well! A little participation never hurt anybody…

    • melissa says:

Oh, the image of Lorelei at the felt board is too sweet! That first story time attempt for us was pretty sad, but at the same time, I suppose it’s a good thing that story time is so popular. It was nice to finally make it in time to get a “ticket.”

  • Wonderful! Sounds like it might feel pretty nice to have some laid back Fall days after having visitors. I love Annabelle’s grin in that shot at the end!

  • Beautiful smiles! I love it when you share your lastest photos. I really like Annabelle’s leaf crown. Thank you for sharing.

  • Mud Hut Mama says:

What a beautiful imagination Annabelle has! I love the photos you shared – especially the leaf crown – so lovely even if it didn’t last long.

  • Amy says:

I love the leaf crown! How beautiful! And what a neat restaurant to have storytelling time. We go to the library, but I love to be able to have snacks while watching! Q-ball hasn’t joined the other kids while dancing, either, so I can imagine your surprise and excitement!
